SEPTEMBER 3 - 25, 2009

Throughout history artists have mentored and learned from one another, Trifecta Gallery pays homage to this time-honored tradition with Sush Machida-Gaikotsu and Brian Porray as poignant and prime working examples of this dynamic relationship.  Currently the two artists are at different stages in their careers. Both painters attended UNLV.  Porray, who has been Machida 's studio assistant for the last year, is finishing up of his Master of Fine Arts Degree; Machida-Gaikotsu is in the throes of success after receiving his in 2002.
Upon first look you will notice striking similarities of supreme craftsmanship and vibrant color. Each artist's complex process employs algorithms and vector-based programs to generate intricate images which are then painstakingly hand painted. They are both drawn to geometrically effective composition and the pursuit of idyllic forms.  These similarities, however, merely present a launching point for viewing the differences between the two.  Machida-Gaikotsu tends to look inward referencing cultural/political issues.  His visual language has roots in the vernacular of both the Pop and Finish Fetish movements, while simultaneously pairing Edo-period Japanese imagery with the current aesthetics of the computer screen.  Porray moves outward referencing astrophysical and math-based issues, building upon the sensibilities of hard-edged abstraction with accelerated and technological focus.
